In mid-2009, the Hong Kong government's Highways Department initiated an International Design Ideas Competition for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF). This was the primary border crossing facility design competition held between Hong Kong and Mainland China around that time.
The competition invited professionals in various fields (architecture, engineering, etc.) and the general public to contribute innovative ideas and concepts for the design of the facility, which would be located on a new artificial island next to Hong Kong International Airport.
